How long does frozen semen last?

It is estimated that it will last for thousands of
years.  The oldest frozen semen
used successfully to date was frozen for over twenty  three years before used.

What is the ideal age to collect and freeze semen?

The best age is when the dog is in his reproductive prime

between the ages of 2 and 4.

Are Frozen Semen Banks registered with AKC?

AKC inspects the record keeping of frozen semen banks.  Only frozen semen litters from banks

whose record keeping has been approved by AKC can be registered with AKC.

What is the difference between frozen semen and cool
semen?

Frozen semen can be collected and frozen at the convenience
of the owner, while cool semen (also known as extended fresh semen) needs to be
collected and shipped when the bitch is ready to be breed.  Frozen semen can be kept for long
periods of time, while cool semen should be used preferably within 24
hours.  For further information please  email for  article Artificial Insemination  Fresh, Cool, Frozen and Your Breeding Program. Available from SeagerK9 Reproduction LLC.

What are the advantages of frozen semen for use with
living dogs?

The advantages for using with living studs and many.  It is far safer to ship frozen semen
across the country than shipping a bitch.
Secondly, the semen may be used without interfering with the dog's show
career.  Thirdly, there is no
interference with the home life of the stud dog owner who otherwise would have
to care for an in heat bitch. And fourth,  it

is far cheaper to collect and freeze semen when the dog is in his prime rather
than when he is older and his semen quality is not as good.  These are the main advantage and of
course there are others also.

How many breedings will I get from one collection?

This cannot be determined until after the semen in collected
and processed.  It will depend on
the quality and quantity of the semen.   It will also depend on if your intend to do surgical
inseminations or vaginal inseminations.
Less will be used for surgical inseminations. Generally you will get from
one to four breedings.

How many collections should I get?

This depends entirely on you.  Some of the questions you should ask yourself follow. Is all
the semen going to used on your own itches?  And if so, how many do you intend to breed?  Will you be selling semen to other
breeders?  Certainly you should get
a few more than what you think you will use, allowing for misses.

How long will frozen semen last once it is shipped to the
vet

The semen will be shipped in a dry shipper and will stay
viable for two weeks once it is shipped.

How is the best way to inseminate a bitch with frozen
semen?

This will depend on the individual circumstances.  With giant breeds, it is probably best
to do surgical inseminations.  If
the quality of the semen is poor, surgical insemination should be done.  If the quality is good and plentiful,
certainly a vaginal insemination can be done.

Are some breeds better candidates for frozen semen?

Breeds that normally have problems with natural breedings
will probably still have problems with frozen semen.  Fortunately for our breed, Dalmatians, frozen semen works
very well.

How do you transport frozen semen?

Fozoen semen is transported in liquid nitrogen dry shippers
via Federal Express.

Can my vet collect my dog and send the semen to you to
freeze?

No, the dog must be present here at the lab for us to
collect and freeze.

Can you ship frozen semen to other countries?

Yes this can be done.

It is important for the recipients to check with their Department of
Agriculture and also their governing Kennel Club organization to ascertain the
rules regarding importing frozen semen.
Some of them are quite stringent.

Can Frozen Semen from other countries be shipped here for insemination?

 Yes, this can
be done.  However after October 1998,
the stud dog must have his DNA on record with AKC.  It is best to check with AKC to see that the country in
question has a registry that is recognized by AKC.

Will my dog have to be dna tested to have his semen
froze?

As of October 1, a DNA swab must be taken and sent to
AKC.  Dogs whose semen was frozen
before this date are not affected.
The DNA sample can be collected at the semen bank at the time of semen collection.
